Jack's 2 Week Check-Up

Well I'm almost a week late in posting about Jack's 2 week check-up but better late than never!  We saw the doctor on Wednesday and Jack is so super healthy!! - that is one huge plus of delivering three days late...plenty of time for the baby to 100% develop in the womb.  Notes about our visit:

  • Jack weighs 9lb 15.5oz (probably 10 by now!).  That is in the 87th percentile.
  • He is 22.5" long - 99th percentile.  Looks like we'll maybe have a little basketball star!
  • The doctor commented that Jack looked like he was in for his 2 month check-up because he is just so big!
  • Jack's circumcision looks great - hooray!
  • The doctor took off his umbilical cord (it was hanging by a thread!) and said we don't have to put the topical cream on anymore that we were using for his infection.  Yay!  We think his belly button is just the cutest thing! - he has an innie :]
  • We were reminded to always sleep the baby on his back, feet should be at the foot of the crib and, when possible, put him to bed with a pacifier.  These are all the [current] recommendations to reduce the risk of SIDS.
  • The doctor told us to start tummy time 15 minutes a day (in five minute intervals) to keep the neck muscles strong.
  • Jack had been having a serious breast preference when nursing.  He only liked to nurse from the left and it took me forever to get him to latch on the right side.  I asked the doctor about this and he said it's normal for some babies to have a preference and it is usually because of the way they were positioned in the womb (their neck was craned to one side and so they don't like to turn it the other direction).  He told me to turn his head to both sides at every diaper change to stretch out the muscles and get him used to having his head each direction.  I also had read online about breast preference before going to the doctor and one of the suggestions was to nurse the baby in the lying down position and sometimes this helps them get used to latching on their least-preferred side.  I started to do that when nursing on the right side and he has gotten so much better at latching on the right - hooray! (because it was really frustrating to spend 20 minutes latching him in the middle of the night!)
Wednesday was such a big day for us.  In addition to Jack's two-week we also picked up his birth certificate (I was so excited! - I don't even know why but it is so cool!), gave him his first real bath since his umbilical cord was off (he loved it!) and went on our first walk!

It was so fun to take Jack on a walk in his stroller and he really, really loved it!  He looked around at everything.  I was instructed to not go on any walks until the two-week mark so it was so nice to get out of the house for awhile and get to be outside and get some exercise!  Since our first walk we have taken several more.  Usually, Jack & I go on a walk in the morning (um or early afternoon which now seems to be my "morning") while Tom is studying and then we go on a walk all together as a family in the evening.  The evening walk is my favorite since Daddy gets to come with us but our morning walks are fun too :]

Speaking of Daddy, Tom has seriously been the best daddy ever.  I'm not kidding, I could not have asked for a better daddy for Jack (or a better husband for myself!).  He always offers to take Jack when he is fussy and he almost always can calm him down.  Daddy's love for Jack is so apparent and it is so fun to watch him interact with our sweet little boy.  Jack really loves his daddy and he always stares at him when Daddy is holding him.

Despite Jack's breast preference, he is a really great nurser!...and a really frequent one too :]  He nurses every 1.5-2 hours during the day and every 3 hours at night.  No wonder he is growing like a weed!

We are really, really loving being parents to Jack.  He is such a sweet baby and makes our lives so fun.  Why didn't we do this earlier? :]

My cousin Jordan and his wife Megan came to visit Jack last week!

I'm glad Tom documented that I do sometimes take a nap when Jack is napping...just not very often.

Our first walk!

Jack's first real bath :]

Jack is not the biggest fan of tummy time.  He starts crying after about three minutes.
