SLIDER

all the other stuff.

all the other stuff.

Friday, September 28, 2012

so Jack & I were driving to costco last night to get some groceries.
I turned the radio on and the [female] DJ was having a conversation with a [male] listener.
it went something like this
[mind you, we came in in the middle of the conversation]:

DJ: and how long have you been together?
Listener: About 2 years.
DJ: Good for you, sounds like you've stuck it out through hard times.
L: Yep.
DJ: And you're still happy.
L: Still happy.
DJ: and still in love.
L: still in love.
DJ: and how old are you?
L: I'm 27.
DJ: So you're old enough to know what you want in life.
L: Exactly.
DJ: And is there a ring somewhere in the future?
L: *laughs* yes, sometime.
DJ: And has she been hinting at it, mentioning maybe how she wants to wear a long dress? or admiring her best friend's ring saying "honey, look at this gorgeous ring!"
L: *laughing* yes.
DJ: So what's the hold up?
L: I just need to get some things in order first.
DJ: Like what?
L: I need to get out of college first.
DJ: Why?
L: Because we don't want to have to worry about all the other stuff.  We want to be comfortable.

and the conversation went on ending with the DJ playing the listener's requested song.
but that last sentence is the ringer.
it's the one that made me remember the whole conversation.
because I thought to myself "how sad."
maybe his fiance agrees with him and wants him to finish college before they become engaged.
maybe she, too, wants to be "comfortable"
and not have to "worry about all the other stuff."
or maybe she just wants to get married despite those reasons.
either way I just felt sad that they were going to put off the start of the rest of their lives together because they didn't want to have to worry about all the other stuff.
because isn't it better to get to worry about all the other stuff with your spouse by your side?
I, for one, am grateful that I didn't have to worry about all the other stuff on my own
and I know T is too.

I'm glad we didn't wait until he finished college.
yes, we worried
about school
student debt
pinching pennies
paying rent
but we did it together.
and through it all we were still comfortable.

and because we worried about all those things together
we're going to be even better worrying about
raising Jack
buying a home
paying the mortgage
[still] pinching pennies
and we plan to do all of it together.
comfortably.

let me just say
I'm glad we were brave enough to worry about all the other stuff
because as I've heard my mom say about a million times in the last month
Stuff doesn't matter.
People matter.

teacher sister.

meet my cute teacher sister

isn't she just the cutest high school teacher you've ever seen!?
i hope my high school boys never have a teacher this pretty.
they would never accomplish anything!
her blog is so entertaining.
i'm recommending it to you!

two months.

today we went to the doctor for jack's two month check-up.
he did great!!
weight: 14 lb 15 oz - 95th percentile
length: 24.5" - 98th percentile
head circumference: 16 3/4" - 100th percentile
we were not surprised to find out that jack is 95% +
everyone who sees him is surprised he is only two months old!
even the nurse laughed when she weighed him and said
"he's only two months!"
and even the dr said "he's only 2 months old? what a big boy!"
yes, this is our little monster!

Jack was so happy at the doctor's office (pre-shots, mind you).
he laughed & coo'd & smiled & giggled
the whole time the doctor checked him out.
and he just loved looking at himself in the mirror.
who can blame him - that is one cute baby!
Jack had to get 4 immunizations today.
3 injectable.
1 oral.
he made funny faces when they gave him the oral.
and then the nurse made me hold his legs down while she injected the other 3.
jack was smiling and cooing until the first needle went in.
and then he started bawling.
i really had to concentrate on holding back tears.
it was so, so sad :(
this is jack after the injections:

doesn't it just make you want to cry?
poor little baby!

since we had the car today (hooray!)
we went to visit Grandma & Grandpa Wallace
after dropping Daddy off at work.
Jack just thought cousin Hayden was the funniest person ever.
he laughed and laughed when Hayden played with him.

and when Hayden saw Jack's bandaids he said
"oh noooo, what happened?"
in the saddest little voice.
what a sweet cousin!

worth it.

I am a stay-at-home mom.
It means I'm on-the-clock 24/7.
It means my lunch "break" is really not a break at all
but more of just a race against nap time.
It means living off one income
and going without a lot of nice things.
It means changing every messy diaper
and every dirty outfit.
It means I spend a good portion of my days without adult interaction
[yes, it can get lonely.]

But it also means
not missing one smile
or giggle
or coo.
It means not missing one opportunity
to snuggle
or play
or give kisses.
It means I will be the one
to teach
to listen
to comfort
all the time

If someone offered me a job that paid a million dollars
I would say
no thanks, I'd rather be doing this.
Because I can already tell
it's worth it.

a day in the life.

Tuesday, September 25, 2012

Jack is 2 months old today (time flies!) and I would definitely say we have somewhat of a daily routine at this point.  Walk through a day with us...

Jack & I get up for the day sometime between 7-8am
depending on how well Jack slept the night before.
I eat then Jack eats.
Or Jack eats then I eat.
depending on when he last ate and how hungry he is.
then I load him up in the jogging stroller
[one of the best baby purchases I've made, FYI]

of course Mr. Bunny comes along
[he comes everywhere with us]
i can't forget Jack's pacifier, blanket, or burp cloth
otherwise i might have to head back home to get them.
If it's Monday, Wednesday, or Friday
then you'll see us running
[training for the 5k we plan to run in the spring!]
If it's Tuesday or Thursday
you'll see us out for a leisurely stroll.
we walk anywhere between 2 and 5 miles
depending on how Jack is doing
and how early/late of a start we got.
if we leave anytime after 8:45 it will be a short walk
because it starts to get too warm around 9am.
whether we are walking or running
we listen to my "running" playlist on amazon cloud

we listen to music but we also listen to birds & crickets.
we see lots of things on our walks/runs
like the beautiful scenery on the trails

and birds
and bunny rabbits
[real ones, not just Mr. Bunny]
and lizards [baby ones too!]
and last week we even saw coyotes
...a whole pack.
[we decided to take a detour and did not run down the street that would have caused them to be surrounding us. we thought it was a smart move.]

Jack usually falls asleep somewhere along the walk/run.

sometimes he stays asleep when we get home
but, like this morning, sometimes he wakes up

look how happy he is!
whether he's awake or still asleep
I move Jack from the car seat to his bouncer
[bring it upstairs with me]
get on the exercise bike
and "ride" about 4 miles.
I can't wait until Jack is old enough to sit on the back of a real bike.
since Jack is still tired he falls back asleep during my bike ride
[this is my time to Pinterest!]
Jack is still asleep when I'm done biking
so I bring his bouncer downstairs and into the bathroom with me
and I hop into the shower.
sometimes Jack wakes up either while traveling downstairs
or while I'm in the shower.
this morning he woke up when I carried him downstairs.

but don't worry; he fell back asleep during my shower.
Usually Jack wakes up before I can get my hair and makeup done.
so he nurses
and then i dress him for the day
and then we play.
then he's tired again
[the life of a baby!]
so i put him in his swing
wrap a blanket around him real tight
give him his pacifier
and of course Mr. Bunny!
turn on the swing and the water sound
and leave the room
he talks to himself or sings
sometimes it takes just one minute
and sometimes one hour
but eventually he will fall asleep
all by himself.

this is my time to finish doing my hair & makeup
and then do as many chores as i can before he wakes up again
like laundry. and clean the bathroom. and make the bed. and tidy up.

then jack is awake again!
so he sits in his bouncer
while i finish some chores.

he is happy to watch me and his birdies.
then he eats. and then we play.
he loves the sound of rattles
and silly songs i make up.
he loves to be tickled
and smiled at.
he just coos and coos
and smiles
[and giggles too!]
it's the cutest thing ever.

then jack goes down for yet another nap!
and falls asleep all by himself again.
i indulge in an episode of say yes to the dress or house hunters hurry and eat lunch.

then do as much as i can from my to-do list
like blogging. and journaling.

then aunt jai and uncle chris come home from school!
they play with jack for a little bit
before cheer & homework.

we continue the cycle of eat/play/sleep
and wait and wait for daddy to come home.
i start dinner while jack sleeps or plays in his swing or bouncer
then daddy comes home between 5:30-6:30.
it's a great big party because we are so excited!!
jack and daddy play
[clearly i need a better picture of how much laughing goes on while these two play.
jack thinks daddy is just so funny.]

and i finish dinner.
then everybody eats
and cleans up.

then daddy has to study for the last part of the CPA exam.
so jack & i play.
sometimes by ourselves
and sometimes with grandma or grandpa
or aunt jai or uncle chris.

later in the evening we go on another walk.
usually grandma comes along.
and sometimes aunt jai
if she isn't at cheer or tumbling or work or doing homework
[she is one busy little girl]
and daddy if he can get away from studying
and uncle chris if he isn't busy playing xbox.
we walk about 5 miles.

every other night jack gets a bath.
he loves loves loves bathtime.
the only part he screams at is getting out.
it's pretty immediate.
lift him out of the water and the screaming begins.
but i hurry and wrap him up in the towel
and then he is happy again.
the other day we put him in this cute robe:

we all just about died with the cuteness.
there were lots of jokes about jack jack requesting room service.
doesn't he just look like a little man?

after bath time it's time for bed.
so jack eats and then gets swaddled in his SwaddleMe
[another great baby purchase]
then i sing him two primary songs
say a prayer with him
and lay him in his cradle.
I wind up the musical Willow Tree figurine
and leave the room.
and jack jack falls asleep all by himself.
[we just started not rocking him to sleep during naps and bedtime
and jack is doing so great!]

I do some leg workouts and spend a little bit of time with T
[he is still busy studying]
watching the office usually.
or whatever someone else is already watching.

Then I join Jack Jack in the room and go to sleep.

and then it starts all over again.

*I should add that this is our routine most days but sometimes we join my mom and dad for lunch or run a few errands with my mom on her days off.  If there is a doctor appointment and we get the car for the day then we run all kinds of errands and go visit Grandma & Grandpa Wallace.  We are happy to have adjustments to the routine sometimes.  Jack is such a good baby and is content to sleep and play and eat wherever we are.*

Heavenly Father has been good to us.
We are loving life.

Snuggle Bug

Wednesday, September 19, 2012

How lucky am I to have such a cute & sweet snuggle bug?

The luckiest.

It's a sad day!

Tuesday, September 18, 2012

My poor little buddy has had this concerned look on his face all day.

Why?

My best guess is that the poor little boy has a cold and, along with that cold, a sore little throat.

Yesterday Jack was not sleeping well. He didn't take any real naps between 1:30pm and bedtime (10pm). Just little 20 minute cat naps here and there. Finally at 10:00 I thought maybe something was bothering him since every time he fell asleep he would wake right back up.

So I gave him baby Tylenol and within 30 minutes he was out (finally!). He woke up at 2am (unusual because he has been sleeping through the night for over 2 weeks) so I nursed him a little and gave him more Tylenol. He "slept" until 5 but was in a really restless sleep. I couldn't sleep because he kept making funny sounds whenever her swallowed. Like he was choking or something. So then I started to wonder if he had a sore throat. He had a stuffy nose when he woke up at 2am and he had been drooling some during the day (not wanting to swallow?). Today he has cried at every feeding (poor little boy!!) and makes a sad face whenever he swallows.

Pretty sure this little baby has his first sore throat. It makes for one sad baby and one sad mama :(

Here's to hoping it goes away soon. I miss my happy little buddy!

Jack Jack & Mr. Bunny

They are quite fond of each other.

What we've been up to!

Wednesday, September 12, 2012

Please excuse me for being a horrible blogger.  Now that we are living with my parents we have only our laptop (our desktop is packed away) which is horribly old and slow and it takes about a decade just to upload pictures.  It's a huge headache to blog so I have been putting it off as long as possible.  Since Jack is in a deep sleep I decided now would be a good time to finally play catch-up!  So here is what we have been up to the last month!

We had a fun visit with my good friend from work, Chelsy, and her little boy, Jaxon!

Jack & Jaxon. Aren't they adorable!?
You will have to excuse my post-baby fat...but this is Chelsy! I love her to pieces (and miss her terribly!!)

When Tom moved to California (without me and Jack-Jack!) we stayed with Kelli & Taylor for a night and Ryan & Rachel for a few days until our flight to California 5 days after T left.  Jack-Jack was such a good baby for me the whole time!  Such a cute little thing!

Ryan, Rachel & I went to In N Out and I just had to get a picture of Jack's first experience!
I think he liked it!

Jack has been learning how to move a little bit.  5 minutes before I took this picture he was facing straight at this camera angle and his head was on the center of the burp cloth.  I brush my teeth and come back and he has wiggled away!
Jack is almost 4 weeks old here.
We did lots of fun things with my siblings before we moved to California.
We went shopping with Aunt Kelli
went to a house-warming party for Ryan & Rachel
played games with R&R and K&T
went to church with K&T
had dinner with everyone
and just had a grand time!

Then we said some sad goodbyes.
To Aunt Kelli & Uncle Taylor...
...and Ryan & Rachel (who I don't have any pictures of??)
We miss everyone already!

And then arrived in California (after a wonderful plane ride with a very happy and well-behaved baby!)
and introduced Jack to lots of new people.
Like Great-Grandpa Davis (and great-grandma too!)
And lots of cousins.
Like Brittney.
and Kimberly.
And Ryan.
(and so many other cousins who I have not taken pictures with yet!)
and he has met lots of aunts & uncles!
like aunt lisa
& so many more!
I always forget to do the picture-taking thing!

Then last week the Woodlands came for a visit and to bless their new baby, Nathan.
Jack met Aunt Laurin
and cousin Emma
and cousin Nathan (who is just 7 weeks older than Jack)!
(and max too!)
Living with my family has been fun.
Jack Jack gets to spend lots of time with Grandma, Grandpa, Uncle Chris and Aunt Jai!

and we get to visit the other side lots too!
We've been spending some time by the pool:

Jack has been sleeping through the night (for a week and a half now!) with his favorite little bunny.

We blessed Jack on Labor Day weekend.
Daddy gave Jack a beautiful blessing.
This is my side of the family.

this is our little family.
and this is the wallace side of the family!

(lots of the) Wallace cousins were there

and all of the Davis cousins (I'll insert picture later...)

It was a beautiful blessing day and Jack Jack was so cute in his sweater knitted by his Great-Grandma Masters.
We just love our sweet Jack to pieces!
Oh, and Jack is starting to smile at us!

Look at that cute dimple!

In other news...
Tom started work with PwC!
He spent time in San Francisco the first two weeks for training.
Now he is working on their client GenCorp (who is just a short drive away!)

Jack & I have been spending lots of time together at home.
We're best friends :]
Jack is growing like a weed!
Everyone thinks he is 3 or 4 months old.  He is only 7 weeks (today)!
He thinks Daddy is so funny.
He is sleeping through the night (as mentioned above) 6-8 hours!
He gets tummy aches a lot because he has a hard time with BM's.
The poor baby spends a couple hours each day just trying to go potty.
He loves his bunny blanket, his swing, and his bouncer.
And he just loves to be held.
He loves car rides.
and he LOVES walks. If he isn't tired his eyes are glued open the whole time looking at everything!
if he is sleepy he keeps his eyes open as long as he can then falls asleep and stays that way the whole walk.
He sometimes likes his pacifier and sometimes not.
He is NOT a fan of tummy time.  I feel so bad for him that I just don't make him do it even though the doctor told me to have him do it for 15 minutes each day (in 5 minute intervals).
I have him do it for like 5 minutes every other day.
I just can't stand his sad little face!
Even though I sometimes miss my job at Moutainwest Foot & Ankle,
being a mommy is the best job ever.
I wouldn't trade it for anything.
